"Kenapa pakai dropbar di mountain bike?"

Mungkin ini pertanyaan yang timbul bila melihat dropbar dipakai di mountainbike. Melihat dropbar sekilas terlihat dan terkesan ribet untuk dipakai di medan offroad. Terbayang posisi yang tak nyaman dan terkesan ekstrim saat melewati jalur-jalur offroad, apalagi bila melewati turunan, bagaimana mengeremnya?

Dropbar, dalam sejarahnya ada sejak dahulu, mendahului flat handlebar.
Kelebihan dropbar dibandingkan dengan model lain adalah lebih banyak posisi tangan yg bisa ditawarkan dalam mengontrol sepeda.

Awal mulanya alasan dalam pemakaian dropbar untuk offroad di mountainbike adalah karena posisi tangan yang lebih ergonomis dan juga memanfaatkan tangan serta tubuh kita sebagai suspensi alami karena belum adanya sistem suspensi depan waktu itu.

Untuk mencapai itu ada beberapa syarat yang harus diterapkan dalam penggunaan dropbar untuk offroad yang berbeda bila dibandingkan untuk onroad. Jadi tidak hanya langsung memakai dropbar seperti di roadbike ke mountainbike. Syarat-syarat yang dibutuhkan untuk mendapatkan hasil yang baik dalam penggunaan dropbar di mountainbike antara lain:

1. Posisi dropbar yang harus lebih tinggi.
Maksudnya lebih tinggi adalah posisinya harus lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan dropbar di roadbike. Karena untuk mountainbiking kita lebih sering memakai posisi di dropnya untuk kontrol sehingga posisi dropnya harus selevel dengan posisi flatbar.

Hal ini bisa dilakukan dengan menggunakan stem dengan rise yang lebih besar sudutnya >40 derajat, contohnya: stem sepeda trial atau untuk sepeda Panasonic MC-Comp saya menggunakan quillstem DirtDrop dari Nitto, atau kalau punya dana berlebih bisa custom stem sendiri. Bisa juga dengan menambahkan steerer extender atau mengganti fork dengan steerer tube yang lebih panjang.

2. Memakai dropbar yang lebih lebar,
Untuk offroad, semakin sempit jarak handlebar akan semakin susah mengontrol sepeda kita, oleh sebab itu handlebar lebar seakan menjadi standar untuk mountainbike. Untuk penggunaan dropbar sangat disarankan pula untuk menggunakan dropbar yg lebih lebar, dalam hal ini bisa dicapai dengan menggunakan dropbar dgn sudut flare yg besar sehingga akan lebih ergonomis. Untuk ini saya beruntung bisa menemukan dropbar DirtDrop RM-14 dari Nitto.

3. Menyesuaikan drivetrain dengan kokpit yang sekarang.
Mengganti flatbar dengan dropbar otomatis akan merubah pula drivetrain untuk penyesuaian.
Untuk pengereman bila kita masih memakai rem cantilever maka kita cukup mengganti brakelever dengan brakelever standar roadbike yang tidak terlalu sulit untuk ditemukan, namun bila sepeda sudah menggunakan V-brake atau discbrake maka diperlukan brakelever khusus dengan mekanisme linear pull ataupun menggunakan discbrake khusus roadbike yang sekarang sudah mulai banyak bermunculan.

Sementara untuk gearshifternya harus pula disesuaikan, bisa digabungkan dengan brakelevernya (brifter) ataupun dipisahkan. Bila memakai brifter maka derrailleur depan pun harus disesuaikan. Untuk sepeda saya, saya menggunakan Shimano bar end shifter yang bisa diatur untuk mode index ataupun friction.

Untuk mountainbike dengan memakai dropbar kita bisa lihat kembali ke sejarah awal-awal perkembangan mountainbike, dalam hal ini dipelopori oleh Charlie Cunningham, Steve Potts, Ross Shafer (Salsa), Scott Nicols (Ibis) dan tidak lupa Grant Petersen (Rivendell) dengan Bridgestone MB-1 yang merupakan mountainbike dengan dropbar yang pernah diproduksi secara massal yang kemudian diikuti oleh Specialized dengan model RockCombonya, dan mungkin pabrikan-pabrikan lain yang saya tidak tahu.
